Male Enhancement for Dead Pine Tree Rejected by City

February 19th, 2010 | by Heather Lacey |

I was pleased to discover that today’s dose of humor originated right in my own backyard. Hmmm… Allow me to rephrase that, as I’m not referring to my literal backyard — more like someone else’s backyard near my town of residence.

The City of Tempe, Arizona required that a dead pine tree carved in the shape of an erect penis be removed from a suburban backyard. The homeowner, Adam Starr, was issued a violation notice following a combination of anonymous complaints and increased tourist vehicle traffic in the neighborhood.

The eight-foot phallus was a true testament to male enhancement; however, Starr claims that was not his intention for the stump. Earlier this month, Starr enlisted the help of friends to remove the dead tree from his backyard. Instead of removal, his friends (under the influence of alcohol and chainsaws) decided to carve the tree into the shape of a penis. Although only a practical joke, the effort and craftsmanship that went into this carving is evident through immediate recognition of the subject.

The massive wood erection poked its head over the block wall encircling Starr’s yard, eliciting a variety of reactions from neighbors. Oddly enough, no one complained about the unattractive dead tree until after it was carved into a penile likeness. Although some neighbors found the carving amusing, the response was overwhelmingly negative. Apparently, there’s little room for artistic expression in suburbia.

The penis stump made its final curtain call on Sunday, Feb. 14, when it was cut down in compliance with the city’s request. Since the citation was specifically for removal of a dead tree, Starr managed to meet the requirement for removal and still maintain possession of the carving. Local fans of art, penises or tree stumps can now place their bids for purchase of the piece on eBay.
