Penis Pumps: What They Are and How They Work
January 29th, 2010 | by Heather Lacey |Erectile dysfunction is a growing problem, especially in older men and those recovering from prostate surgery. Many treatment methods exist on today’s market, including oral medications (like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra), medications administered into the urethra, medications injected directly into the penis and penile implants. A penis pump is another option. Penis pumps are an effective means of treating erectile dysfunction without prescription medication or invasive surgery.
Since its market debut in the 1970’s, the penis pump has become a popular solution for erectile difficulties, and even for improvement of penis size and performance. Though they are sometimes the subject of mockery and spoof in film, the cold hard truth about penis pumps can not be denied: They work. They are a well-known and trusted means of erectile enhancement.
Penis pumps have a very low risk of complications or side effects, and unlike pills or injections, a penis pump is a one-time expense. This makes it the most cost effective erection enhancement method. Penis pumps can also be used in combination with other treatments, like herbal supplements and creams. Pumps can be also used following prostate surgery to regain sexual function.
The operation principle of most penis pumps centers simply on creating a vacuum around the penis. This lack of air pressure creates suction, which draws excess blood from the circulatory system into the corpus cavernosa. When the penis is filled with this extra blood, an improved erection occurs.
A penis pump is relatively simple to use. First, the tube is placed over the penis. Then, either a hand pump or electric pump is used to create a vacuum. Depending on the severity of erectile dysfunction, you may also want to place a ring at the base of the penis to help contain the blood and maintain the erection. It generally takes two to three minutes to achieve an erection once you’re comfortable with using the device. The erection will last long enough to enjoy sex.
Although penis pumps do not cure erectile dysfunction, they can create an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Many men experience positive results when using a combination of medication and a penis pump. Before considering using a penis pump, consult your doctor. Erectile dysfunction often has an underlying cause that can be treated and corrected.
