Tissue Growth Research for Male Enhancement
January 17th, 2010 | by Heather Lacey |New tissue engineering research has proved successful in functional regrowth of the penis, which could prove beneficial for millions of men suffering from sexual performance challenges.
Just months ago, researchers at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina were able to create a fully-functional rabbit penis. The lab-engineered penis was difficult to create, as the solid muscle structure makes it such a unique organ.
This research has been the most successful attempt at replacement of erectile tissue. Although the research is in its infancy, the promising results with rabbits are pointing in the direction of successful regrowth in human men suffering from erectile dysfunction. In fact, the rabbits with bioengineered penises began to mate with female rabbits within one minute of the procedure. Another control group of rabbits with penile implants or no erectile tissue were unable and unwilling to mate.
Medical science advances like these are an exciting step towards treating penile birth defects and injuries, as well as erectile dysfunction.
